Competition Panels and Diagrams

Architectural competitions act as a tool for enhancing a design and selecting planning partners. The quality of urban development, high-rise buildings, open spaces and art-in-architecture is thus sustainably improved. Nevertheless, this planning and awarding tool is repeatedly scrutinised.

The Competition Panels and Diagrams volume from the Construction and Design Manual series presents the tasks and outcomes of competitions. Twenty-five international projects from 2009 to 2015 shed light on design methods and techniques employed by numerous architects – with drawings from current competitions by more than 500 architects, including David Chipperfield, BIG, Ben van Berkel, querkraft, COOP Himmelb(l)au and Massimiliano Fuksas. In addition, drawings from the recent past, for instance by Daniel Libeskind and Axel Schultes, as well as historic drawings by Hans Pölzig, Hans Scharoun and Carlo Weber are presented. The collection is supplemented by explanations of technical and formal criteria regarding the presentation of competition entries and addresses expenditure issues in relation to prize money and architects’ fees. An essay by Eva-Maria Barkhofen - head of architectural archives at the Akademie der Kuenste - on architectural drawings throughout history as well as theses and guest contributions by judges and entrants complement the volume, which serves as inspiration and advice for the layout of one's own competition panels.

For almost twenty years, the authors have provided advice and moderated at the interface between clients, administrations and architects. With this book they pass on to readers their nearly twenty years expertise in design competition management and the organisation of award procedures in all areas relating to planning. The projects presented in the book were coordinated by [phase eins].
