Facade Construction Manual

A facade is the first impression that you get of a building and at the same time it conveys between the exterior and the interior. It unites several, sometimes contradicting functions: it is a protective shell, supplies heat and electricity and interacts directly with the surrounding public space. The topic has become increasingly important in architectural practice and in public perception in recent years.

Be it the use of clever technology or traditional, simple solutions: the Facade Construction Manual from the Edition DETAIL series imparts the necessary planning fundamentals in regard to technology and design beyond current trends in the form of a compact reference textbook. The title initially presents the more general technological and constructive basics that are relevant to the design and development of a facade. The main focus of the title lies on the materials and their properties, which are pivotal elements for the planning process not only in regard to the local, cultural, functional, economic or ecological criteria, but also when taking transport, assembly and maintenance into account. Thus, the special potential for the application of individual materials such as stone, concrete, wood, metal or glass become recognisable. The more than 100 international examples of realised projects illustrate individual applications, tried and proven classics, standard solutions and innovative approaches. The third section of the title highlights facade variations that have been specifically developed to fulfil functional tasks such as multi-layer building shells made from glass, manipulators that alter the effects and the use of energy from the surrounding environment. The current topics of green and installed facades as well as energy-oriented modernisation are also covered.

The Facade Construction Manual bundles the necessary expertise from the technological and design aspects of the planning of a facade all the way to the constructional details, always taking the latest developments into account. This makes it such a valuable reference work for the everyday work of architects, civil and specialist engineers as well as students of these subject areas. This revised and expanded second edition takes the newest research findings and technological developments into consideration and has been amended with examples of trailblazing projects.
