Weltpostpark Bern: a residential building with a sustainable effect
Currently the new urban quarter Weltpostpark is being developed on the Murifeld in the Swiss city of Bern. Among the projects are three residential buildings by SSA Architekten. The first of these will be ready for occupation in December. SSA Architekten are not only increasing the density on the site, but are also at the same time creating high-quality, yet affordable housing. And all of the energy that is required for the residential buildings will come from renewable sources.

Architect behind the Palace of the Soviets
Boris Iofan (1891-1976) was one of the most significant architects from the Stalin era and is best known for his connection with the monumental Palace of the Soviets - his ambitioned masterpiece which was never completed, initially on account of the Second World War, and then because of shortages in the supply of building material. But the style of the architect, whose main oeuvre was realised in the 1930s, was not limited to the Socialist Classicism that flourished under Stalin.

Buildings as Sources of Materials
Central Europe is richer in raw materials than commonly thought - but they are not found in the ground. Never before have there been more metals, plastics, oil-based composites or minerals in the industrialised nations. One only has to bring them back into circulation. The same goes for buildings and cities. Realising them as gigantic raw material deposits is a new approach taken by the Manual of Recycling.

A Catalogue of Polish Churches post 1945
Over 3,000 churches were built in Poland between 1945 and 1989 – more than in any other European country – despite the rejection that the communist state showed towards religion. The majority of these often quite unconventional buildings were constructed together with architects and craftsmen by the parish communities themselves. The authors have named this unique heritage "Day-VII Architecture ", as most of the building was done on the weekends. Neither legal nor prohibited, many of these places of worship became crucial sites for Poland's democratisation process.
