German Architecture Annual 2020

The DAM Prize for Architecture in Germany 2020 has been awarded to David Chipperfield Architects for the James-Simon-Galerie in Berlin. The four other finalists are the new taz building in Berlin by E2A Piet Eckert and Wim Eckert Architekten, the entrance building to the open-air museum Glentleiten, Großweil (Upper Bavaria) by Florian Nagler Architekten, the new Stylepark building next to the Peterskirchhof cemetery in Frankfurt am Main by NKBAK Architekten, and finally, the residential ensemble "einfach gebaut" in Berlin by orange architekten.

Since its launch in 2007 the annually awarded DAM Prize recognises outstanding buildings in Germany. In 2020 the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) is joined for the fourth year in a row in the presentation of the award by its close cooperation partner JUNG.

The German Architecture Annual 2020 presents the 26 projects built in Germany and overseas by German architects that were shortlisted by a jury for the DAM Prize for Architecture in Germany 2020 in a series of reviews by respected authors. Curators of the museum, together with renowned architects and architecture critics, chose this year's finalists from a  pool of some one hundred nominations. As in previous editions, the 2020 volume presents in-depth portrayals of the shortlisted entries alongside a special appraisal of the DAM Prize winner.

The German Architecture Annuals document more than just a cross section of the most noteworthy buildings completed each year. The individual volumes also reveal which building tasks are of particular importance and at the forefront of public discussions during the time of publication. The projects selected for the longlist – which have already been presented in the Architectural Guide Germany 2020 (available in German) – show that among the most urgent building tasks faced by the country today is the creation of more residential housing. Sixteen of this year's shortlist of 26 projects are houses or buildings that incorporate residential housing. This reflects the urgency and demand for more such kinds of construction. Another aspect can be found in the fact that approximately a quarter of the examples have been realised beyond the limits of the big cities: it shows how concepts for country living are growing in significance. This is also something that is covered in an essay by Reiner Nagel, Chair of the Executive Board of the Potsdam-based Federal Foundation Baukultur.
