Architectural Guide Japan

Over the past 50 years Japanese contemporary architecture has achieved worldwide recognition. It is seen as highly innovative and often manifests itself in futuristic designs. But it is also sensitive like no other in its response to the centuries-old tradition of Japanese built heritage and has managed to maintain a meaningful dialogue with it - a result of the challenges presented by the highly urbanised society.

In the Architectural Guide – Japan the author Botond Bognar introduces close to 700 representative examples from Japan in concise, knowledgeable texts. An introductory essay sees the renowned specialist on Japanese architecture outline its development from the early Meiji era (1868) to the present, and place it within its historical and political context. Information on how to find each of the entries is provided by QR codes as well as 33 area and city maps in the appendix, which are further enhanced by exact directions on how to get there and details on public transport connections. The structuring of the guide into regions, whose defining features are presented after a brief introduction, and a grouping of the projects based upon their geographical location follow the practical requirements of the travellers who make their way on the search for these architectural gems: buildings close to one another can thus easily be visited in one go. An alphabetical and chronological index complete the title, and some 930 colour photos - all taken by the author himself - are used to illustrate the texts. All of these features not only make this guide a handy companion for the discerning traveller, but also a practical reference book for the library at home. It presents an informed overview on the peculiarities of Japanese architecture to interested readers who do not have a  specialist background on the subject.

This Architectural Guide - Japan is the second, completely revised and extended edition of the 2013 title, with more than 100 new projects added to the register.
