Architectural Guide Tbilisi
Tbilisi, capital of the Republic of Georgia, has attracted increasing international attention in recent years. Extraordinary buildings with their ultramodern design, urban megaprojects enacted by successive administrations, and countless real estate adverts shilling surrealist investment properties aside, there has also been the recent establishment of the Tbilisi Architecture Biennial.
The Architectural Guide Tbilisi provides insights into the rich history of this city, which is a unique melting pot of diverse architectural styles. The guide presents a hybrid urban landscape shaped by different historical, political, and cultural tides, each leaving a large range of architectural evidence in their wake: in the historic city centre these might be the domed sulphur spa bathhouses, winding alleys, or a crumbling caravanserai. But the cityscape also offers Oriental style buildings, as well as more Classicist, Neo-Baroque, and Art Nouveau architecture following Western traditions. A remnant from the times when Georgia was a Soviet Republic can be found in the Stalinist structures, and local contemporary alternatives with their futuristic designs – Tbilisi offers an exciting treasure trove of different building styles and epochs.
The urban historian and preservationist Angela Wheeler introduces the reader to the architectural diversity of Tbilisi, and the different layers of this – at times – contradictory, city. The guide provides in-depth profiles of more than 120 buildings, and suggests themed tours to many others, such as sacred architecture, or buildings following Art Nouveau, or Constructivist styles. Essays contributed by local scholars complete the comprehensive introduction to this multifaceted and fascinating metropolis of the Near East.
This guide is published in the context of the Histories of Ukrainian Architecture series, which was initiated by DOM publishers. The series will include books on current and historic topics involving architecture, urban design, planning methods, and portraits of architects. These titles are published in cooperation with Kyiv-based Osnovy Publishing, in Ukrainian, English and German language editions. Among the Architectural Guides are also those of Kyiv, Kharkiv and the Moldovan capital Chisinau. They are intended to enable a better understanding of Central and Eastern Europe.
The Architectural Guides by DOM publishers are handy travel companions for readers interested in architecture and culture. Projects are carefully selected and researched to make each individual book a ready work of reference, while background information and attractive design inspire armchair travellers to imaginary journeys. The series has received several awards which led to DOM publishers being presented with the Deutscher Verlagspreis (German Publisher Award) in 2020 and 2022.
