Architectural Guide Sarajevo

Buildings and Projects since 1923

Sarajevo is known for its complex and sometimes dramatic history – for example, it was the site where the assassination of Austrian archduke Franz Ferdinand took place in 1914, which led on to the outbreak of the First World War. Or then there was the siege of the city for several years during the civil war of 1992-1996, that brought significant damage and destruction to Sarajevo – traces of which still can be seen in the city’s fabric even today. Before the civil war it had previously come to international attention as a host to the 1984 Winter Olympics. Now it is once again gradually coming into public awareness.

The Architectural Guide Sarajevo presents the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina in all its complexity and takes a closer look at this exciting and aspiring Balkan metropolis. After an introduction looking back to the heritage from the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empires, four chapters introduce some 150 landmarks spanning the last century – from the interwar years to the sometimes quite impressive architecture from socialist Yugoslavia, all the way to contemporary projects. The authors of the guide do not limit themselves to the inner, historically structured centre, but also include the suburbs on the surrounding hillsides and the more topographically challenged parts of the city, as well as including some buildings located beyond Sarajevo’s city limits.

The book was conceived by a group of young authors from the LIFT organisation – Spatial Initiatives, who also regularly contribute to the Days of Architecture, the country’s biggest architecture festival. The guide includes comprehensive photographic documentation alongside numerous current aerial photographs, detailed maps and QR-codes which make exploring the city’s architecture very easy. A practical architectural guide which presents Sarajevo and its surroundings as an attractive travel destination
