German Architecture Annual 2024

For the first time in its history, the DAM Prize for Architecture in Germany 2024 has been awarded to the debut project of an architectural practice. The Studierendenhaus der TU Braunschweig / Study Pavilion on the campus of the Technical University Braunschweig by Gustav Düsing & Max Hacke convinced the jurors through its elegance and transparency, the masterful lightness in its structure, and reduction in materiality and technology. A further four projects had made it to the finals: the Dante II in Munich, by Florian Nagler Architekten, the Kunstraum Kassel / Exhibition hall Kassel by Innauer-Matt Architekten, the Baugruppe Kurfürstenstraße / Building group Kurfürstenstraße in Berlin by June 14 Meyer-Grohbrügge & Chermayeff, as well as the Kantgaragenpalast / Kant Parking Palace by Nalbach + Nalbach, who are also based in Berlin.

Since its launch in 2007, and from 2017 onwards in cooperation with its partner JUNG, the annually presented DAM Prize has been awarding outstanding buildings in Germany. The German Architecture Annual 2024 presents the winning project and the finalists together with the shortlisted entries from Germany and by German architects. In their contributions, respected authors provide in-depth portrayals of the 26 projects that were chosen from a pool of 102 nominations - which included three non-competing building ensembles realised by German bureaus overseas - by a jury for the DAM Prize for Architecture in Germany 2024.

The German Architecture Annual documents more than just a cross section of the most noteworthy buildings completed each year. The individual volumes also reveal which building tasks are of particular importance and currently at the forefront of public discussions - as the nominations are not limited in regard to typology, building size or use. The broad spectrum of tasks can be seen in the longlist, which has already been presented in the Architectural Guide Germany 2024 (available in German). Currently a focus on the search for sustainable building materials can be observed. This is not only due to the rapid developments in the field of (hybrid) timber buildings and the growing use of regionally available materials. Circular building and its increasing effects on the planning process also play a significant role.
