Competitions Panels and Diagrams 2
Planning competitions are used in public and private projects as an instrument for optimising the design and selecting planning partners. For both small and large projects, the organised, fair, transparent and specialist process helps to sustainably improve the quality of urban development, buildings, open spaces, and public art. In order for this planning and awarding mechanism to work, all involved parties have to consider a number of aspects.
The title Competitions Panels and Diagrams 2, from the Construction and Design Manual series, presents a selection of examples showing the calls to tender and results of competitions that have been completed. 27 international projects from 2016 to 2022 illustrate the design methods and visualisation techniques employed by some 100 architectural bureaus. A general introduction essay in the book deals first of all with the organisation of competitions, as this can be relevant to how the entries are presented. The knowledge about the framework and expectations of all involved make reaching a decision considerably easier. Three further essays then present the most important elements for a successful competition, how to initiate the competition system, and the significant rules that should apply. The following examples from completed competition processes illustrate a profile of planning competitions from Germany, Austria, Albania, Ukraine, Kuwait, Belgium, Canada, and Lebanon. The tenders were of different size and complexity and were made by public and private bodies. All projects are united by the interest in achieving a high degree of quality, and the proficiency of the participants in order to come to a design of extraordinary conciseness which should be presented in a successful manner. The collection of entries can therefore provide a wide range of inspiration for the successful entry at forthcoming competitions.
The authors have been consulting and moderating between clients, authorities, and architects since 1998. This title imparts to the reader their more than 25-year experience in competition management and organisation of tendering processes in all aspects of the planning process. Like its successful predecessor title, this book documents the competition procedures coordinated by [phase eins]
