Cork houses in Catalonia, a nursery school in Paris with straw insulation, a public swimming pool in Madrid made from loam: the use of natural raw materials in todays times of climate crisis and the search for sustainable resources is more significant than ever before. While timber construction is already firmly established in the field of architecture, there is an increasing focus on alternative construction materials such as loam, straw, cork, or bamboo, along with their application features. They offer new potential for building design and provide comfortable living conditions. Natural building materials make it possible to plan energy-optimised, recyclable, and climate-friendly buildings for the future.
The new title Natural Building Materials S, M, L presents examples of how climate-friendly architecture can be achieved based on 30 international projects of all sizes and uses. The buildings present the entire spectrum from “small” to “large”, from less than 400 m² to more than 2,000 m² of floor area, illustrating a wide range of different design and construction options across all kinds of typologies. Holiday homes with seaweed facades and roof coverings from Denmark, a cloister in Bavaria with straw bale insulation, or social housing developments, schools and Kindergartens are just some of the useful examples that can provide inspiration for future projects. The locally sourced building materials used in the examples range from bamboo, wood, cork, loam, natural stone, reed, sea grass to straw. The construction and technical details of the respective solutions are illustrated through plans and detailed 1:20 scale drawings, as well as comprehensive and in-depth texts on the respective projects. The title will serve as a source of knowledge and inspiration for everyone wanting to plan and build with natural materials.
The Material series by Edition DETAIL has already seen the publication of Timber Buildings S, M, L and Brick Buildings S, M, L. The series documents the application possibilities of traditional and new building materials that represent climate-friendly and sustainable architecture solutions.
