Mies in His Own Words

Complete Writings, Speeches, and Interviews 1922-1969

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was an architect who communicated his ideas with the same disciplined restraint as he developed his buildings: even in language he celebrated the art of omission. Reading his texts reveals how one of the most influential architects of the 20th century – who generally was seen as being rather taciturn – also contributed to a deeper rethinking of the architectural practice and education by means of words.

Mies in his Own Words. Complete Writings, Speeches, and Interviews 1922 – 1969 is the comprehensive collection of all of his accessible written and spoken contributions from a period spanning almost 50 years. Read together, they reveal the breadth of Mies’ deep engagement with architecture and education in Germany and the USA. The approximately 120 documents range from articles, interviews, critiques and lectures or manuscripts to prefaces, book contributions or jury opinions as well as statements and notes. They also include transcripts from radio and TV programmes, conversations with students and the ”Lohan Tapes”. Some of the manuscripts are now available to the general public for the first time. This wide range of both written and spoken word makes it possible to draw conclusions on Mies’ architectural philosophy and enables a deeper comprehension of his buildings. They form a significant basis for further research on his ideas. Moreover, the texts reveal how the intellectual discourse with his discipline was important to Mies, also in context with major cultural and societal upheaval. And the co-editors show how Mies was able to extend his influence well beyond the classroom-studio and the profession to reach a general audience eager to learn more about his architectural philosophy.

Fritz Neumeyer had previously opened up and analysed Mies van der Rohe’s written oeuvre in his 1986 title The Artless Word (a German reissue was published by DOM publishers in 2016). This was followed by the first publication of the Lohan Tapes (The Lost, Last Words of Mies van der Rohe: The Lohan Tapes from 1969. DOM publishers, 2020), making this the third title (the second in English) published by DOM publishers dedicated to the theoretical observations of Mies van der Rohe.
