Wood is not only a traditional building material - even being one of the oldest known to mankind - it also has future potential. The new title Engineering Nature showcases the current developments in structural planning with wood on the basis of around 20 outstanding engineering structures. The examples were not chosen for their superlatives, but rather to illustrate how wooden structures are increasingly establishing themselves in ever more types of buildings, and to highlight the issues of the constructive and regulatory frameworks they are confronted with.

Urban Renewal of Historic Centres in European Dictatorships presents examples of the redevelopment of historic centres from Mussolini’s Italy (Rome, Brescia, Bologna, Naples), Stalin’s Soviet Union (Moscow), Hitler’s Germany (Berlin), Salazar’s Portugal (Lisbon, Évora, Óbidos) and Franco’s Spain (Madrid, Toledo, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Santillana del Mar). These are followed by a brief summary of the history of the redevelopment of historic city centres in Europe.

A club house draws on traditional architecture
New builds and conversions on the Saint Apollinaire golf course, Michelbach-le-Haut, France
Mulhouse-based DeA architectes found inspiration for their range of new builds on the Saint Apollinaire golf course in the traditional barns of the former priory. They also converted the existing building stock for the use of players and visitors. Even after the redevelopment as a golf course, the grounds remain open to the public.
